Lupus patients look like anyone else on the outside-healthy, vibrant human beings. Inside, however, there is a battle being waged with their immune system. Healthy tissue is attacked, organs are damaged, inflammation and pain are spread. Symptoms are felt that are not readily visible to others making lupus difficult to diagnose. Patients struggle to express their feelings and problems to physicians, family, friends and employers causing frustration and despair.
LUPUS IS REAL
Lupus is not just a medical problem. Beyond the struggle with the disease itself, lupus affects emotions, finances, home and job security, and relationships, family, friends and employers.
LUPUS DISRUPTS LIFE AS YOU KNOW IT
The Lupus Alliance of America and it's support groups are dedicated to improving the quality of life for those afflicted with lupus - through educational programs and support services for lupus patients and their families, increased awareness of lupus and support for research to discover the cause and cure for lupus.

| Facts About Lupus
What Causes Lupus?
It is likely that there is no single cause but rather a combination of…factors that work together to cause the disease. In Lupus the bodies immune system doesn’t work as it should. The exact cause may differ from one person to another.
Diagnosing Lupus
We recommend that you see a Rheumatologist if you suspect that you have lupus. They will need to do a thorough examination of:
* Medical History
* Complete Physical Examination
* Laboratory tests: Blood Work Urinalysis, Blood Chemistry, etc.
Who Gets Lupus?
Anyone can get lupus. But 9 out of 10 people who have it are women. African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian and American Indian Women are more likely to get lupus than Caucasian women. Both African Americans and Hispanic/Latinos tend to develop lupus at a younger age and have more symptoms at diagnosis (including kidney problems). NIH Publication No. 01-4958 Page 7
